Indian equity markets opened higher on Thursday, July 16, despite mixed global cues. In early trade, the BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty 50 advanced, supported by buying in information technology, automobile and select blue-chip stocks. However, shares of ICICI Lombard General Insurance declined sharply following weaker first-quarter financial results.
Market participants are closely tracking first-quarter (Q1) corporate earnings, global economic indicators and foreign investor activity, which are expected to influence market direction in the coming trading sessions.
In early trade, the BSE Sensex was trading around 77,411, up approximately 225 points. The Nifty 50 gained about 67 points to trade above the 24,145 level. Market breadth remained positive, with a larger number of stocks advancing than declining during the opening session.
According to analysts, buying in information technology companies and strength in blue-chip stocks played a significant role in supporting the benchmark indices during early trading.

Information technology stocks outperformed during the session, with HCLTech, Infosys, Tech Mahindra and Wipro recording gains. Select metal stocks, including Hindalco, and several automobile stocks also traded higher. Investor focus remained on companies expected to report improved quarterly earnings.
Shares of Paytm and HDFC Life Insurance also posted notable gains in early trade. Buying in HDFC Life followed ber quarterly financial results, with the company reporting growth in New Business Premium, Annual Premium Equivalent (APE) and Value of New Business (VNB). Paytm shares also attracted buying amid positive investor sentiment.
Despite the broader market gains, several large-cap stocks traded lower. SBI Life Insurance, Grasim Industries, ONGC, Bajaj Finserv and Eicher Motors declined during early trading, with pressure attributed to profit booking and sector-specific factors.
ICICI Lombard General Insurance was among the biggest movers of the session, with its shares falling nearly 10% in early trade after reporting weaker first-quarter financial results. The company's net profit declined to about ₹403 crore from approximately ₹747 crore in the corresponding period last year, representing a decline of about 46%.
According to the company, large fire insurance claims and the impact of judicial decisions related to the motor third-party portfolio weighed on profitability. Although the company reported growth in total income, investors reacted primarily to the sharp decline in net profit, resulting in increased selling pressure on the stock.
