Asian Financial Markets React to Rising US-Iran Tensions
Indian equities are expected to open lower on Monday as escalating geopolitical tensions between the United States and Iran weighed on global financial markets. Amid heightened uncertainty, GIFT Nifty traded lower ahead of the opening bell, indicating a subdued start for domestic equities. A sharp rise in crude oil prices has also renewed concerns over global inflation.
Market participants believe that if tensions in West Asia persist for an extended period, they could have wider implications for energy supplies, global trade, and investors' risk appetite. The impact could be reflected across most major global equity markets, including emerging markets.
During pre-open trading, GIFT Nifty was trading at 24,044, down around 190 points, or approximately 0.8%. The index is regarded as an important indicator of the opening trend for Indian equity markets. The decline suggests domestic investors may remain cautious in the near term.
Asian markets also traded lower as investors assessed geopolitical developments and the potential economic impact of higher energy prices.
Uncertainty over energy supplies in West Asia increased amid the US-Iran tensions, leading to an approximately 3% rise in international crude oil prices. For energy-importing countries such as India, higher oil prices remain a significant concern.
Higher crude oil prices could increase fuel costs, putting pressure on transportation, manufacturing, and consumer goods prices. If the situation persists, controlling inflation could become more challenging for central banks.
