The Indian stock market closed lower on Monday, with the Sensex falling 0.76% and the Nifty 50 declining 0.70% in the first trading session of the week. Selling pressure was evident across several major companies, including ITC, Tech Mahindra, Hindustan Unilever and Larsen & Toubro (L&T). Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) was among the stocks that closed higher.
At the close of trading, the BSE Sensex declined 547.65 points, or 0.76%, to 71,924.68. The NSE Nifty 50 fell 157.10 points, or 0.70%, to settle at 22,363.35. The market had recorded gains on Friday, but the upward movement did not continue into Monday's session.
The decline was widespread across the market's leading stocks. Of the 30 Sensex constituents, seven closed higher, while 23 ended the session lower.
The Nifty 50 recorded a similar trend. According to the available data, 13 of its 50 constituents closed in positive territory, 36 declined and one remained unchanged from its previous closing level. Selling across several major companies contributed to the decline in the benchmark indices.

ITC recorded the steepest decline among Sensex constituents, with its share price falling 3.23%. Shares of IT services company Tech Mahindra declined 3.10%.
Hindustan Unilever fell 2.10%, while Larsen & Toubro (L&T) declined 1.87%. State Bank of India (SBI) shares closed 1.78% lower, and Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) fell 1.67%.
Bharti Airtel, Bajaj Finserv, UltraTech Cement and IndiGo also recorded declines. Reliance Industries shares ended 1.01% lower. Losses across these major companies accompanied the broader decline in the market.
Despite the overall market decline, several stocks closed higher. Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) gained 1.38%, making it the best-performing stock among Sensex constituents.
Mahindra & Mahindra shares rose 0.84%, while Kotak Mahindra Bank gained 0.66%. HCL Technologies closed 0.47% higher, followed by Bajaj Finance with a gain of 0.28%.
Sun Pharma advanced 0.13%, while Titan rose 0.09%. These gains were insufficient to offset the broader selling pressure, and both benchmark indices ended Monday's session lower.
