The Indian government has entrusted Bengaluru-based startup Sarvam with the responsibility of developing the country's first Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based Large Language Model (LLM).

Sarvam AI: The Indian government has tasked Bengaluru-based startup 'Sarvam AI' with developing the nation's first AI-based Large Language Model (LLM). This move is a significant step towards India's technological self-reliance and aims to propel the country towards global leadership in AI. Under this initiative, the government is providing significant support to the startup 'Sarvam' for a completely Made-in-India AI model.

Significant Government Support

Under India's ₹10,370 crore IndiaAI mission, 'Sarvam AI' has received special encouragement. The plan includes providing the startup with high-performance computing resources, such as GPUs (Graphics Processing Units), to fully develop their model within India.

Under this scheme, Sarvam will be provided with access to up to 4,000 GPUs for six months to train their AI model. The government has already selected 10 companies to supply 18,693 GPUs, which will be utilized for this purpose.

This support to 'Sarvam' could be a major breakthrough in India's journey towards AI self-reliance. This initiative will empower Indian companies to develop smart solutions in the field of AI, completely developed and trained within the country. Furthermore, this initiative will lead to the development of AI models capable of handling Indian languages, providing citizens with convenient and effective technological solutions in their mother tongues.

Sarvam AI's Three Key Variants

'Sarvam AI' is currently working on its model, with development underway on three variants: Sarvam-Large, Sarvam-Small, and Sarvam-Edge. These variants aim to develop AI models suitable for different levels and various users.

  1. Sarvam-Large: This variant will be designed for large-scale use, aiming to create a powerful and reliable model capable of handling more complex tasks.
  2. Sarvam-Small: This variant will cater to users with limited resources but who wish to utilize the power of AI. This variant will be lightweight and more accessible.
  3. Sarvam-Edge: This variant aims to enable AI usage in locations with limited resources, such as rural areas or places with slow internet speeds.

Through these variants, 'Sarvam' aims to develop suitable AI solutions for various segments of India's population. These variants will also feature voice-based interfaces, understanding of Indian languages, and be prepared for large-scale deployment.

A Crucial Step Towards Self-Reliance

This endeavor by 'Sarvam AI' is a significant step towards India's technological self-reliance. Through this initiative, AI models will be fully developed and trained in India, reducing the country's dependence on foreign technologies. Simultaneously, this initiative will propel India towards global leadership in AI, a significant achievement for the Indian technology sector.

Furthermore, this model aims to honor Indian languages. 'Sarvam AI' believes that considering India's diversity and rich linguistic heritage, it is essential to adapt AI models to Indian languages. This AI model will provide Indian citizens with intuitive and effective technological solutions in their mother tongues, promoting innovation at the local level.

Vivek Raghavan's Vision

Vivek Raghavan, co-founder of Sarvam AI, believes the company's goal is to develop multi-modal and multi-scale AI models in India specifically designed for Indian citizens. Raghavan stated, "Our goal is to provide Indian companies with smart solutions without sending their data abroad."

We want to develop this technology at the grassroots level so that it is useful for every section and every citizen. This initiative will not only give a new direction to the Indian AI industry, but it will also play a crucial role in the country's digital empowerment journey.

A New Chapter in India's AI Journey

This initiative by Sarvam AI marks the beginning of a new chapter for India. This domestically developed AI model will not only benefit Indian citizens but will also place India in a ber position in the global AI landscape. The AI model's adaptability to Indian languages, its ability to understand voice-based interfaces, and its development according to the country's needs, all these aspects will shape the country's technological future.
