India's External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar emphasized the necessity of H-1B visas and a global workforce at the United Nations. He stated that the role of skilled professionals is indispensable in the international economy.
S. Jaishankar: India's External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar made a significant statement regarding H-1B visas and the global workforce during the UN General Assembly session. He stated that the world must accept the reality of a global workforce. Jaishankar also pointed out that many countries cannot meet their labor demands based on their national demographics. His statement came amidst US President Donald Trump's strict visa stance and increasing fees.
No one can escape the global workforce
Speaking at an event organized by the Observer Research Foundation, Jaishankar said that while the global workforce might be a subject of political debate, no one can escape it. He clarified that if one looks at demand and demographics, many countries do not have enough professionals due to their local populations. Jaishankar also conveyed the message that the importance of a global workforce is indispensable today for the stability of the international economy and trade.
A Challenge for the International Economy
Jaishankar stated that the world needs a global workforce model that is more acceptable, contemporary, and skilled. He emphasized that we must consider how a global workforce can be prepared in a distributed manner to meet the demands of workplaces internationally. The External Affairs Minister stressed that this is a significant question that the international economy must collectively address.
H-1B Visa and Indian Professionals
For Indian IT and tech professionals, the H-1B visa has long been a primary means of securing employment in the United States. According to data, approximately three-quarters of the beneficiaries of this visa are Indian. Under this visa, companies can employ foreign professionals in fields such as IT, medical, and engineering. The H-1B visa not only serves as an opportunity for professionals but also plays a crucial role in technological cooperation and trade between India and the US.
Trump Administration and Increased Visa Fees
However, US President Donald Trump implemented new fees on the H-1B visa. Under this new rule, companies will have to pay an additional fee of one hundred thousand dollars. This fee is in addition to the existing filing and legal expenses. This will make the visa more expensive and could make the process of working in the US challenging for Indian professionals. Jaishankar's statement came against this backdrop, where he underscored the necessity of a global workforce and implicitly countered Trump's strict stance.
Global Workforce
Jaishankar stated that a global workforce is not merely a means of employment; rather, it is the foundation for international development, technological advancement, and economic stability. In today's era, countries must consider global demand in addition to their national needs.
