Horrific Incidents During Independence Day Celebrations in Karachi

Pakistan celebrates its Independence Day on August 14th with great enthusiasm and fanfare. However, this year, celebratory firing incidents in Karachi turned the joy into sorrow. As people were celebrating in several areas of the city, indiscriminate firing incidents suddenly erupted. In these events, 3 people died and more than 60 were injured.

Geo News, citing officials, reported that those killed in the firing included an 8-year-old girl and a senior citizen. The injured were immediately admitted to nearby hospitals.

Firing Incidents Spread Throughout the City

The firing incidents were not limited to just one or two areas. Gunfire occurred in areas of Karachi such as Azizabad, Korangi, Liaquatabad, Lyari, Mahmoodabad, Akhtar Colony, Kemari, Jackson, Baldia, Orangi Town, and Paposh Nagar. Furthermore, firing was also reported in Sharifabad, Nazimabad, Surjani Town, Zaman Town and Landhi areas.

Officials stated that these incidents are a result of negligence and disorder. They have appealed to citizens to celebrate Independence Day safely and to refrain from engaging in such violent activities.

Fatalities and Injuries from the Firing

The most tragic incident of firing occurred in Azizabad, where a girl was shot and killed. Meanwhile, in Korangi, a man named Stephen died from a gunshot wound. In total, at least 64 other people have been injured, including women and children.

Such Incidents Occur Every Year

Firing incidents during Independence Day in Pakistan are not uncommon. In 2024, similar violent incidents occurred in Karachi. In that year, a child died, and over 95 people were injured. Such incidents have put the joys of Independence Day at risk every year.

Police Response

Karachi police have immediately launched an investigation. According to reports, police officials have stated that there could be several reasons behind the firing, such as disagreements, personal enmities, and robbery. Police have assured that strict action will be taken against those involved in aerial firing. They have appealed to the public not to participate in such celebrations and to abide by safety regulations.
