The Kedarnath pilgrimage in Uttarakhand was disrupted after debris and stones fell from a hillside near the Chirbasa helipad, blocking the pedestrian route from Gaurikund to Kedarnath Dham in Rudraprayag district. Following the blockage, the administration halted the movement of pilgrims at Gaurikund as a precautionary measure to prevent them from entering the affected stretch.

The decision was taken with the safety of pilgrims in mind, considering the weather conditions and the state of the route in the mountainous region. The affected section was deemed unsafe for pedestrian movement following the fall of debris and stones.

According to the available information, the blockage near the Chirbasa helipad made it unsafe for pilgrims to proceed towards Kedarnath Dham. A large number of devotees use this route to reach the shrine. After receiving information about the obstruction, the administration informed the concerned officials and disaster management teams. Measures were subsequently initiated to assess the condition of the route and remove the accumulated debris.

The pedestrian route to Kedarnath passes through mountain slopes and geologically sensitive terrain. During rainfall, the risk of soil, rocks and debris falling from hillsides increases. The incident near Chirbasa disrupted the movement of pilgrims along the route. Authorities cannot declare such stretches safe immediately after a blockage, as the possibility of further rockfalls may persist.

District Disaster Management Officer Nandan Singh Rajwar said that following the accumulation of debris near Chirbasa, a team from the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) was engaged in clearing debris and stones from the route. The concerned teams are monitoring conditions at the site. Pilgrim movement will resume only after the clearance work is completed and the safety of the route has been assessed.

The administration has also stated that a separate announcement will be issued regarding the resumption of the pilgrimage. Pilgrims have been advised to wait for official instructions before proceeding further.

The decision to stop pilgrims at Gaurikund is intended to prevent crowds from reaching the hazardous section. If large numbers of devotees move towards the blocked route simultaneously, it could create disorder and hamper relief and clearance operations. Pilgrims have therefore been instructed not to proceed without the administration's permission and to follow directions issued by officials and police personnel deployed along the route.

Reaching Kedarnath Dham requires a long trek, and several sections of the route can be affected by adverse weather or falling debris. The Chirbasa area is one of the sensitive stretches along the pilgrimage route. The closure affects devotees who have already reached Gaurikund and are preparing to continue their journey to the shrine. Although the halt may require pilgrims to wait, the administration has prioritised safety under the prevailing conditions.

Administrative and disaster management teams are continuing to monitor the route. During debris removal, officials must also assess whether there is a risk of further stones falling from the hillside above the affected stretch. Clearing the debris alone will not be sufficient to establish that the route is safe. Authorities must assess the condition of the path before allowing pilgrims to resume their journey.

Further arrangements will be made after weather conditions become suitable and the route is found fit for pedestrian movement. Until then, pilgrims have been advised to remain in safe locations and avoid rushing towards the blocked section. Attempting to cross the obstruction, walk over loose debris or stand beneath a mountain slope could expose them to danger.

The District Emergency Operations Centre is coordinating with the concerned departments. Information on the restoration of the route and the resumption of the Kedarnath pilgrimage will be communicated through official channels. The administration will decide on restoring pedestrian movement only after the debris and stones near Chirbasa have been removed and the route has been assessed for safety.
