Krishnanagar Court Issues Arrest Warrant Against TMC MP Mahua Moitra Over Alleged Remarks

Krishnanagar court has issued an arrest warrant against TMC MP Mahua Moitra after repeated non-appearance in a case concerning alleged controversial remarks about the Indian Army and Operation Sindoor. The allegations have not yet been finally established.

TMC MP Mahua Moitra has been issued an arrest warrant by a Krishnanagar court in connection with a case over alleged controversial remarks. The action followed her repeated failure to appear before the court despite summons. The allegations in the case have not yet been finally established.

The case against Mahua Moitra relates to alleged controversial remarks concerning the Indian Army. The complainant alleged that during an interview, she made remarks about ‘Operation Sindoor’ and issues related to Indian military action that were considered objectionable. A legal complaint was subsequently filed against her in Krishnanagar.

According to reports that emerged in May 2026, Nadia resident Gaurang De filed the complaint before the Krishnanagar court. The complaint alleged that Moitra made allegedly objectionable and anti-national remarks concerning the Indian Army and Operation Sindoor.

These remain allegations, and their final confirmation by the court is pending.

During the proceedings, the court directed Mahua Moitra to appear before it. According to the latest reports, the court issued an arrest warrant after she repeatedly failed to appear despite summons.

According to a Times of India report, the court viewed her conduct as continued non-compliance with judicial directions and issued the warrant on that basis.

Nadia police officials have also confirmed that an arrest warrant was issued in Mahua Moitra’s name. However, initial reports contained differing information regarding the complete legal status of the warrant.

Mahua Moitra is also facing a separate case in West Bengal over allegations that she made remarks that hurt religious sentiments.

In July 2026, the Calcutta High Court granted her interim relief in the case. The court restrained the police from taking immediate coercive action and directed Moitra to cooperate with the investigation and appear before the investigating officer.

Moitra later approached the Supreme Court in connection with the case. In August, the Supreme Court declined to interfere with the Calcutta High Court’s directions, following which she was required to comply with the process of joining the investigation.

The current arrest warrant is separate from these proceedings and is connected to the case concerning the alleged remarks on the Indian Army and Operation Sindoor.

Moitra has been accused of using language during an interview concerning military tensions between India and Pakistan and Operation Sindoor that the complainant objected to.

Media reports, citing the complainant, said that Moitra questioned the Army’s action concerning Operation Sindoor and allegedly made an objectionable remark. A criminal complaint was filed against her on this basis.

Whether any particular remark constitutes an offence will be determined through the judicial process after examination of the allegations and available evidence.

Mahua Moitra entered active politics after working in the investment banking sector and joined the Trinamool Congress.

In 2016, she won the Karimpur Assembly seat in West Bengal, establishing her presence in state politics. She subsequently won the Krishnanagar Lok Sabha seat in the 2019 general election and entered national politics.

In the 2024 Lok Sabha election, she won the Krishnanagar seat again and continued her political role in Parliament.

Mahua Moitra’s political career has previously been associated with the ‘Cash for Query’ controversy. In 2023, she faced serious allegations in the case. Following a report by the Parliament’s Ethics Committee, the Lok Sabha terminated her membership in December 2023.

She subsequently won the Krishnanagar seat again in the 2024 Lok Sabha election and returned to Parliament.

The arrest warrant means that the police have been given a legal order to produce the accused before the court. Issuance of an arrest warrant does not mean that the person has been found guilty of the allegations.

The next developments will include Mahua Moitra’s appearance before the court and further directions concerning the arrest warrant. The investigation and hearing in the case concerning the alleged controversial remarks will also proceed.

The allegations against Moitra remain subject to the judicial process, and no final finding of guilt has been made in the case.
