A house in Bariatu Jagir village of Latehar district, Jharkhand, was targeted by thieves who fled with cash and gold and silver jewellery worth around ₹4 lakh. During the theft, the thieves also locked the doors of some neighbouring houses from outside, preventing residents from leaving their homes to oppose the theft or seek help.
The incident came to light in the morning when family members found household belongings scattered inside the house. After discovering the theft, they informed nearby residents, following which a large number of villagers gathered at the spot and informed the police.
The thieves reportedly entered the house under cover of darkness. After the family members went to sleep, they searched the rooms and cupboards and found cash and jewellery. They then collected the valuables and fled from the spot.
The thieves also locked the doors of neighbouring houses from outside. As a result, residents of those houses could not leave during the night. It is suspected that the doors were locked to prevent anyone from seeing their activities or attempting to catch them or alert the police.
In the morning, neighbours realised that their doors had been locked from outside. They managed to get the doors opened, after which information about the theft spread through the village.
According to the family, jewellery and cash kept inside the house were stolen. The stolen jewellery is estimated to be worth around ₹4 lakh. The family is assessing the exact amount of cash stolen after checking the household items and documents.
After receiving information about the incident, a police team reached the spot and inspected the scene. Police examined the house and surrounding area and attempted to determine the route used by the thieves to enter and leave the property.
Police are also investigating the route through which the thieves reached the village and the direction in which they fled after the incident. Footage from CCTV cameras along nearby routes and other potential locations may also be examined.
Villagers are being questioned to determine whether anyone saw a suspicious person or vehicle near the village on the night of the incident. Information about any suspicious activity could help investigators identify the thieves.
Police have also begun collecting information about the stolen jewellery and cash. A list of the stolen items is being prepared so that they can be identified if recovered.
The manner in which the theft was carried out has raised the possibility that the thieves may have had prior information about the house and surrounding area. Police will investigate this aspect and examine the available evidence before reaching any conclusion.
The fact that doors of neighbouring houses were locked from outside has made the incident distinct from a routine theft. Police are trying to determine how many thieves were involved and whether they jointly carried out the theft.
If fingerprints or other technical evidence are recovered from the scene, they may be sent for examination. Police may also examine records of suspects linked to previous theft cases.
The incident has caused concern among villagers, who have demanded increased police patrolling in the village at night. Villagers said that if thieves could lock the doors of neighbouring houses from outside, they could also carry out a larger offence.
Police have appealed to villagers to immediately inform them about any suspicious person or activity. Residents may also be advised to monitor the movement of unfamiliar people in the village at night and provide information about suspicious vehicles to the police.
Police have started investigating the case and are collecting possible leads to identify and arrest the thieves. Investigators expect that technical examination and information gathered locally could help them reach the accused.
The theft in Bariatu Jagir village has raised questions about security arrangements in rural areas. The theft of jewellery worth around ₹4 lakh along with cash, coupled with the locking of neighbouring houses from outside, has caused concern among villagers.
The investigation will determine who was involved in the theft, how the thieves obtained information about the house and where the stolen property was taken.
