Brazilian President Lula da Silva's political ideology is considered socialist and progressive. He has advocated for the Global South, multipolarity, and economic equality at the global level. According to him, the global trade system based solely on the US dollar is no longer sustainable. Lula said, "The world needs an alternative in which trade is not only through the dollar. We want central banks to explore alternatives among themselves."

BRICS Currency Plan

The BRICS group (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) is working towards developing a new payment system to challenge the monopolistic role of the US dollar. Russia proposed a possible gold-backed currency "Unit" at the 2024 Kazan summit. However, India is taking a balanced approach on this issue and is only emphasizing reducing trade risks.
