Madhya Pradesh Minister Vijay Shah is embroiled in a major controversy following his recent objectionable and controversial remarks against Colonel Sofia Qureshi, leading to widespread criticism.
Bhopal: Madhya Pradesh Cabinet Minister Kunwar Vijay Shah is facing legal trouble over a controversial statement. He challenged a High Court order related to his comments against Indian Army officer Colonel Sofia Qureshi, but the Supreme Court has refused immediate relief, adjourning the hearing until May 19.
What is the issue?
The controversy began after Colonel Sofia Qureshi, an Indian Army officer, briefed the media about Operation Sindur, an operation against Pakistan. During a public event, Vijay Shah made objectionable remarks about Colonel Qureshi, referring to her as the "sister of terrorists," sparking outrage nationwide.
This statement drew sharp criticism and the matter reached the Madhya Pradesh High Court. Taking cognizance of the matter, the court ordered an FIR against Vijay Shah under sections 152, 196(1)(b), and 197(1)(c) of the Indian Penal Code.
Shah's Plea in the Supreme Court
Challenging the High Court order, Vijay Shah filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking the quashing of the FIR. The Supreme Court, during today's hearing, adjourned the case until May 19, clarifying that it would not stay the High Court order at this stage.
The matter has also taken a political turn. Shah faced criticism both within and outside the BJP for his remarks against a female army officer. Amidst the growing controversy, Vijay Shah apologized, stating, "I cannot even imagine thinking anything wrong about Colonel Sofia Qureshi in my dreams. If my words have hurt her, I sincerely apologize." He further added that Colonel Sofia has served the nation above religion and caste, and he salutes her.
Political Reactions
Opposition parties targeted Vijay Shah and his party, the BJP, over the issue. A Congress spokesperson stated, "A person who uses such language against a woman officer of the country's armed forces should not hold ministerial office; it is against both democracy and morality." Even within the BJP, some leaders termed the minister's statement unfortunate.
