Madhya Pradesh Parties Agree on 27% OBC Reservation, Forge Joint Strategy for Supreme Court

All political parties, including the BJP and Congress, have reached a consensus on providing 27 percent reservation to OBCs in Madhya Pradesh. In this regard, an all-party meeting was organized at the Chief Minister's residence in Bhopal on Thursday.

Bhopal: All major political parties have expressed historic consensus on 27 percent reservation for Other Backward Classes (OBCs) in Madhya Pradesh. In an all-party meeting held at the residence of Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav on Thursday, the BJP, Congress, Samajwadi Party, Aam Aadmi Party, Bahujan Samaj Party, and other parties passed a joint resolution on this issue.

The primary objective of this meeting was to effectively implement OBC reservation in the state and to formulate a common strategy for the case pending in the Supreme Court. In the meeting, all parties pledged to work together at all levels – legislature, executive, and judiciary.

Statement by Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav

After the meeting, Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav stated, "All parties have expressed their commitment to providing 27 percent reservation to OBCs. Currently, 13 percent out of the 27 percent posts are on hold, and we want these posts to also benefit from OBC reservation soon. This step is a significant initiative towards ensuring social justice."

This matter of OBC reservation is pending in the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court has decided to commence regular hearings from September 23. Before this, lawyers from all political parties will convene by September 10 to formulate a joint strategy. This step has been taken to ensure that all parties have an organized and well-considered presentation in the Supreme Court.

Former Chief Minister Kamal Nath stated on a social media platform that calling an all-party meeting was an attempt to confuse the public. He asserted that the Congress government had already increased OBC reservation from 14 percent to 27 percent in March 2019, thus there was no need to call a meeting.

Total Reservation in Madhya Pradesh is 50 Percent

Due to the total reservation in Madhya Pradesh exceeding 50 percent, the High Court had previously stayed the OBC reservation. Subsequently, in September 2021, the government obtained permission to implement 27 percent reservation after consulting the Advocate General. In August 2023, the High Court directed to keep 13 percent of the 27 percent posts on hold. The state government had filed a petition in the Supreme Court in February 2025.
