Following his controversial statement regarding Colonel Sofia Qureshi, the case reached the High Court, and now the Minister has approached the Supreme Court. What is the controversy?

Madhya Pradesh's Tribal Welfare Minister, Vijay Shah, recently made objectionable remarks about Colonel Sofia Qureshi. Referring to Operation Sindur, he referred to Colonel Qureshi as the sister of terrorists who had killed innocent people in Pulwama. Furthermore, he also taunted Prime Minister Narendra Modi, stating that Modi had appointed the sister of terrorists to the army.

This statement sparked outrage on social media, with opposition parties bly protesting.

High Court takes suo moto cognizance, orders FIR

Taking serious note of the escalating situation, the Madhya Pradesh High Court took suo moto cognizance and ordered the registration of an FIR against the Minister. Subsequently, a case was registered against Vijay Shah under sections 152, 196(1)(B), and 197(1)(C) of the BNS at the Manpur police station in Mhow.

Petition filed in Supreme Court

Vijay Shah has now filed a petition in the Supreme Court challenging the High Court's order. He has pleaded for the dismissal of the FIR and has also apologized for his statement. In his petition, the Minister stated that he did not intend to hurt anyone's sentiments and that his remarks were made in the heat of the moment.

Minister Vijay Shah's clarification

After the video went viral, Minister Vijay Shah publicly apologized. He stated, "If my statement has hurt anyone's feelings, I sincerely apologize. Colonel Sofia Qureshi is a daughter of our nation who has performed commendable service, rising above societal and caste barriers in upholding national duty. What I said was uttered in a moment of grief, for which I am deeply ashamed."

Congress demands resignation, protests on the streets

Following the controversy, the Congress has demanded Vijay Shah's resignation. Congress workers staged protests in several cities across the state, including Indore, Bhopal, and Jabalpur. The opposition claims that Shah's statement is an insult to the army and that he has no right to remain in his ministerial position.
