Nine Killed in Head-on Collision in Purulia, West Bengal
Accident: A tragic road accident in Purulia district, West Bengal, claimed the lives of nine people on Friday morning. The accident occurred near Namasol Primary School in the Balrampur police station area on National Highway 18. All occupants of a Bolero vehicle, traveling towards Jharkhand, were involved in a head-on collision with a truck traveling in the opposite direction. The impact was so severe that the Bolero was completely destroyed, resulting in the immediate death of all its passengers.
Passengers Returning from a Wedding Ceremony
According to media reports, all passengers in the Bolero were returning from a wedding ceremony. They were traveling from Adabana village in the Badabazar police station area of West Bengal to Tilaitand in the Neemdih police station area of Jharkhand. At the time of the accident, the Bolero was traveling at a high speed towards Balrampur when it collided with a speeding truck coming from the opposite direction.
Truck Also Lost Control, Overturned in a Field
Following the collision, the Bolero lost control, and the truck also veered off the road and overturned in a paddy field. Upon receiving information about the accident, Balrampur police arrived at the scene. With the help of local residents, the police extricated the passengers from the vehicle and immediately transported them to the nearest primary health center. Doctors pronounced all nine passengers dead upon arrival.
Wreckage Made Identification Difficult
The accident was so devastating that the Bolero was completely mangled. The extent of the damage made it difficult to determine the number of occupants initially. Rescue workers reported that the vehicle was severely crushed, requiring considerable effort to extract the trapped passengers. The accident site was thrown into chaos following the collision, attracting a large crowd.
Identification of Deceased and Notification of Kin
Police have begun the process of identifying the deceased and notifying their families. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem examination. Upon hearing the news of the accident, relatives and villagers rushed to the hospital, creating a somber atmosphere. Police have seized both vehicles and launched a further investigation.
Negligence of Traffic Rules and High Speed Cited as Causes
Preliminary investigations suggest that the Bolero was speeding and lost control on a curve. The truck's high speed also prevented the driver from maintaining control. Locals claim that numerous accidents have occurred on this highway previously, highlighting a lack of speed control and traffic rule enforcement.
