Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar will be declared the national president of the Janata Dal (United) (JDU) again on Tuesday, marking his fourth term in the post, which will continue until 2028. The certificate of his election will be issued at 2:30 pm by the party’s election officer and senior leader Anil Hegde.
The announcement will formally confirm Nitish Kumar’s leadership within the party. The nomination process for the post concluded on March 22, while the deadline for withdrawal of nominations ended at 11 am on Tuesday. No other candidate filed a nomination for the position, resulting in his unopposed election without voting.
This will be Nitish Kumar’s fourth term as JDU national president. He first assumed the role in 2016 after Sharad Yadav stepped down. He was re-elected in 2019. In 2020, he handed over the position to RCP Singh. Subsequently, Lalan Singh served as the party’s national president. In December 2023, following Lalan Singh’s resignation, Nitish Kumar resumed charge of the position.

Nitish Kumar filed his nomination on March 19 at the JDU national office located at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi. The nomination papers were submitted in two sets to the election officer. The process was overseen by the party’s working president Sanjay Jha.
Nitish Kumar was recently elected to the Rajya Sabha. He is scheduled to move to New Delhi next month and will step down as Chief Minister of Bihar. He will, however, continue as the national president of the JDU.
His continuation as national president is expected to maintain organisational continuity within the party. His leadership will guide party policy decisions and alliance-related matters at both the state and national levels.
