An organised kidney trafficking network has been uncovered in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, where young men were allegedly trapped through online gaming applications and coerced into selling their kidneys.

Investigations revealed that members of the network initially targeted youths through online gaming platforms. Victims were made to win small games to gain their trust, after which they were encouraged to place higher bets. Once they incurred substantial losses, the gang offered them loans.

After accepting the loans, victims became trapped in escalating debt, with mounting pressure from the network. They were subsequently persuaded that selling one of their kidneys was an easy way to repay the debt.

The probe further found that some doctors were allegedly involved in the racket. They reportedly manipulated victims into believing that a person can live a normal and long life with a single kidney and that the procedure would not have serious health consequences, thereby preparing them mentally.

The medical procedures were carried out covertly using forged documents to present the transplants as voluntary and legally compliant. Authorities stated that the operation was entirely illegal and involved multiple layers of coordination.

Police and investigating agencies, upon exposing the network, found that it was not limited to a few individuals but involved a larger organised group operating over a period of time. The network included agents, medical staff and other associates performing different roles.

Following the disclosure of the case, concerns have been raised regarding oversight of healthcare systems and online platforms. Experts have called for greater awareness to protect youths from online gaming and debt traps, as well as stricter monitoring and transparency in the medical sector.

Police are continuing an in-depth investigation to determine the scale of the network, with further arrests and disclosures expected.
