Left-arm spinner Prenelan Subrayen has been reported for a suspected illegal bowling action. This report came after the first ODI against Australia, in which he made his debut and took a crucial wicket.

The ICC has confirmed that the match officials have expressed doubts about the legality of Subrayen's bowling action. He will now have to undergo an independent assessment at an ICC-accredited testing center within the stipulated timeframe.

Showed Skill in Debut Match

The 31-year-old Subrayen played his first ODI against Australia on Tuesday. In the match held in Cairns, he took the wicket of Australian opener Travis Head, giving away 46 runs in 10 overs. It was a positive start to his international ODI career. Prior to this, Subrayen made his Test debut against Zimbabwe in 2023 and took four wickets in his very first innings.

His domestic cricket experience is also rich. Prenelan Subrayen is a well-known name in South African domestic cricket.

  • He has taken 246 wickets in 78 first-class matches at an average of 27.80 so far.
  • He has 97 wickets to his name in 102 List A matches.

His consistency and experience earned him a place in the national team. However, the investigation into the suspected bowling action could prove to be a challenge for his career.

South Africa's Impressive Win in the First ODI

Although questions have been raised about Subrayen's action, South Africa put up a b performance in the first ODI, defeating Australia by 98 runs and taking a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. Batting first, the Proteas posted a score of 298/8. Aiden Markram scored 82 runs off 81 balls. Captain Temba Bavuma played a captain's innings of 65 runs off 74 balls.

Young batsman Matthew Breetzke scored 57 runs off 56 balls. In the end, Wiaan Mulder added an unbeaten 31 runs off 26 balls to strengthen the team's score. For Australia, bowler Travis Head proved to be the best. He took 4 wickets for 57 runs in 9 overs. Chasing the target, the Australian team collapsed for 198 runs in 40.5 overs despite a good start. Openers Head and Mitchell Marsh added 60 runs for the first wicket. But as soon as Head was dismissed, the Australian innings collapsed and the score became 89/6.

Mitchell Marsh fought alone, scoring 88 runs off 96 balls, but could not lead the team to victory. The performance of the remaining batsmen was disappointing, and South Africa easily won the match.
