In January-March 2025, 767 farmers committed suicide in Maharashtra. The Vidarbha region was the most affected. Rahul Gandhi targeted the central government, citing the guarantee of MSP and the debt crisis as reasons.
Rahul Gandhi: Recent figures presented in the Maharashtra Assembly are once again raising concerns about the condition of farmers in the country. Between January and March 2025, 767 farmers committed suicide in Maharashtra in just three months. This figure shows that farmers, considered the backbone of rural India, are still forced to commit suicide due to economic crisis, debt, and neglect of government policies.
Vidarbha Becomes the Largest Center for Suicides
According to the report, the highest number of these suicides occurred in the Vidarbha region. The Vidarbha region has previously been known for incidents of farmer suicides. Farmers here are in the most crisis due to drought, debt, crop failure, and not getting fair prices in the market.
Rahul Gandhi Criticizes the Central Government
Congress MP and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, has bly criticized the Modi government at the center regarding the plight of farmers. He responded to this issue on the social media platform X, saying that this is not just a number, but a story of the devastation of 767 families.
"The government is watching the spectacle": Rahul Gandhi
Rahul Gandhi wrote, "Just think, 767 farmers have committed suicide in just three months. This means that about 8 farmers are taking their own lives every day." He said that this situation is very serious and the government is silently watching the spectacle.
According to Rahul Gandhi, the main reasons behind the suicides of farmers are inflation, rising prices of diesel and fertilizers, the high cost of seeds, and, most importantly, the lack of a guarantee of Minimum Support Price (MSP).
Farmers Drowning in Debt, No Hearing
The Congress MP also said that farmers are drowning in debt every day. When they seek relief from the government, they are ignored. He alleged that the government waives thousands of crores of loans of big industrialists, but farmers are humiliated when they ask for loan waivers.
Rahul Gandhi's Direct Attack on the Modi Government
Rahul Gandhi, directly attacking PM Modi, said that the Prime Minister had once said that farmers' income would be doubled, but today the situation is such that farmers' lives are being halved. He cited the SBI-reported fraud of ₹48,000 crore by Anil Ambani and questioned whether the government is only for helping the rich.
Rahul Gandhi said that this system is slowly destroying the farmers and the government is silently watching the spectacle. He says that the government is busy with PR, but the country's food provider is dying every day.
What is MSP and why is it so important?
Minimum Support Price (MSP) is the price that the government definitely gives to farmers when they sell their crops. Rahul Gandhi and farmer organizations have claimed that if the government gives legal guarantee to MSP, farmers will get protection from market fluctuations and they will not sink into debt. Currently, MSP is just a government announcement, it has no legal binding.
