The drainage system in Rani Lakshmibai Ward has deteriorated, making life difficult for local residents. During rainfall, dirty water enters homes directly, forcing many families to build small walls in front of their gates to prevent drain water from flowing inside.
Residents said roads and lanes become waterlogged as soon as it rains. Overflowing drains allow wastewater to enter houses, damaging furniture, household belongings and electronic appliances. They added that foul odour and unhygienic conditions often make it difficult to remain indoors.
People in the area alleged that they have repeatedly complained to the Municipal Corporation and the concerned authorities, but no permanent solution has been implemented. They said that despite the Mayor issuing directions to resolve the problem, the concerned officials have not taken effective action, leading to growing public dissatisfaction.
The situation becomes more severe during the monsoon, with knee-deep water accumulating in several lanes. Residents said children, elderly people and women face difficulties commuting, while two-wheeler riders are also exposed to risks because of waterlogging. At several locations, sewer water spreads onto roads, increasing the risk of infections and diseases.
Local residents said they have been compelled to construct raised platforms, cement walls and temporary barriers outside their homes at their own expense to prevent rainwater from entering their properties. However, they said these measures are not a permanent solution and that the Municipal Corporation should improve the drainage system.
Residents have demanded regular cleaning of drains, repairs to the damaged drainage network and the implementation of an effective plan for rainwater disposal. They said that if corrective measures are not taken in time, the situation could become more serious in the coming days.
Experts said unplanned urban development, narrow drains and the lack of regular maintenance are major causes of waterlogging in cities. They added that scientific development of drainage systems and periodic maintenance could substantially reduce such problems.
Residents of Rani Lakshmibai Ward said they continue to await a permanent solution. They stated that inspections and assurances alone will not resolve the issue and called for prompt and effective action at the ground level to prevent recurring hardship during every spell of rain.
