Sajeeb Wazed Warns of Election Chaos if Awami League Ban Not Lifted as Hasina Faces Verdict & Potential Death Penalty

Sajeeb Wazed warns of severe election impact if the Awami League ban isn't lifted, as Sheikh Hasina faces a Tribunal Court verdict for 2024 protests, possibly a death penalty. Political violence escalates in Dhaka.

Prior to the Tribunal Court's decision, Sajeeb Wazed stated that the February elections would be affected without the lifting of the ban on the Awami League. Violence has escalated in Dhaka, and reports indicate that Hasina faces conviction, possibly the death penalty, in the 2024 protest cases.

Dhaka: Sajeeb Wazed, son and advisor to former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, warned the Yunus government that the upcoming general elections in February would be severely impacted if the ban on the Awami League is not lifted. He stated that the current protest environment could escalate into widespread violence. Wazed issued this statement as the Tribunal Court prepares to deliver its verdict against Sheikh Hasina.

Hasina Faces Conviction in 2024 Protest Cases

The Tribunal Court will decide on Monday whether Sheikh Hasina is guilty of the fatal actions taken during the student-led anti-government protests of 2024. This case remains a major source of political tension in the country. The verdict could directly impact Bangladesh's politics and electoral climate. Hasina maintains that the case is entirely politically motivated.

UN Report Claims Severe Violence

According to a United Nations report, approximately 1,400 people died and thousands were injured in protests between July 15 and August 5, 2024. The report indicates that most deaths resulted from firing by security forces. This is considered Bangladesh's most severe political violence since the 1971 War of Independence. These events also impacted the country's stability and economy.

Heavy Losses for Textile Industry

Sajeeb Wazed Warns of Election Chaos if Awami League Ban Not Lifted as Hasina Faces Verdict & Potential Death Penalty

Bangladesh is known as one of the world's largest textile hubs, supplying garments to global brands. The violence of the 2024 protests forced this industry to suffer significant losses. Exports declined due to factory closures and supply chain disruptions. Industry-related organizations appealed to the government to normalize the situation.

"Perhaps She Will Be Sentenced to Death"

Since leaving the country in August 2024, Sheikh Hasina has been living in exile in Delhi. Sajeeb Wazed claimed that he clearly knows what the court's verdict might be. He stated that Hasina could be convicted and perhaps even sentenced to death. According to him, this decision will be telecast and could further heighten the political atmosphere. Wazed also mentioned that India is providing full security to Hasina.

Hasina Safe in Delhi

In a statement issued in October 2024, Sheikh Hasina mentioned that she can move freely in Delhi but remains cautious for security reasons. She said that living in India has helped her stay away from political pressure. Hasina's family suffered significant losses in the 1975 military coup. Her parents and three brothers were killed in that incident.

Rising Political Violence in Dhaka

Political violence is escalating in Dhaka ahead of the verdict. Several crude bomb explosions occurred on Sunday, and a total of 32 blasts were recorded on November 12 alone. Many buses were set on fire, and incidents of vandalism increased on the streets. Police have detained Awami League activists on charges of vandalism. However, some local leaders have stated that these arrests are being made to exert political pressure.

Deployment of Security Agencies Increased

Security arrangements in Dhaka have been strengthened. Over 400 border guards have been deployed. Blockades have been increased in sensitive areas of the city, and additional personnel have been stationed at checkpoints. Temporary restrictions have been imposed on public gatherings, rallies, and large events. Officials state that any aggressive activities will be promptly suppressed.
