Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay will visit Karur district on July 10 and 11. The two-day visit will be his first to the district since the stampede at a political public meeting in Karur in September last year, in which 41 people were killed and several others were injured.
During the visit, the Chief Minister will meet the families of those who lost their lives in the stampede and offer his condolences. The state government has said it remains committed to providing all possible assistance to the affected families.
The stampede occurred on September 27 during a large political gathering in Karur after the crowd became uncontrollable, resulting in the deaths of 41 people and injuries to several others.
Following the incident, opposition parties alleged serious lapses in crowd management, while the administration initiated an investigation. The inquiry was subsequently transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The investigation is currently continuing under the supervision of the Supreme Court, with the agency examining all aspects of the incident.
The Chief Minister had planned to visit Karur immediately after the stampede but was unable to do so following advice from security agencies and restrictions imposed by the police. At the time, the administration said maintaining law and order in the area was its priority.
Instead, he interacted with the families of the deceased through video conferencing, expressed his condolences, and assured them that the state government would continue to support them and ensure they received all necessary assistance.
At a later stage, the Chief Minister invited the affected families to Mamallapuram, where he met each family individually, paid tribute to those who died in the incident, and conveyed his condolences.
He announced financial assistance of ₹20 lakh for each affected family, with the amount transferred directly to the beneficiaries' bank accounts. He also assured the families that their individual circumstances would be assessed separately and that additional assistance would be provided in the future if required.

According to government sources, the Chief Minister will again meet the affected families during his upcoming Karur visit to understand the challenges they have faced over the past several months and assess what additional assistance the government can provide.
The state government has said that financial assistance alone is not sufficient and that continued attention is required for rehabilitation, education, employment, and social security for the affected families.
The Chief Minister's itinerary also includes the inauguration of several government schemes and development projects in Karur district.
The state government is preparing to launch projects related to infrastructure, public welfare, and public services. The visit is also expected to include review meetings with officials from relevant departments to assess the progress of various projects.
Government and party sources said the Karur visit will mark the beginning of the Chief Minister's wider district outreach programme across Tamil Nadu.
According to the sources, the purpose of the visits will be to thank the public for their support during the Assembly elections, review the implementation of government schemes at the grassroots level, and strengthen administrative functioning. The Chief Minister will also meet local administrative officials and inaugurate development projects and public welfare programmes in different districts.
The state government plans for the Chief Minister to interact directly with citizens through district-level programmes.
During these visits, he will attend official meetings at district collector offices, review the functioning of various departments, and hear citizens' concerns and suggestions.
The government has said that direct engagement between the administration and the public plays an important role in strengthening governance and that the district visits are intended to reinforce public outreach and administrative accountability alongside official government programmes.
