Trump's Alaska Diplomacy Fails as Russia-Ukraine War Intensifies

Despite the Trump-Putin meeting in Alaska, the Russia-Ukraine war intensified. Trump's diplomacy proved to be a failure. Drone and missile attacks on Ukraine continue unabated. Hopes for a ceasefire have so far remained unfulfilled.

Russia Ukraine War: US President Donald Trump's international diplomacy is now mired in controversy. He had claimed to have taken steps towards a ceasefire for the Ukraine war during his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska. However, after this meeting on August 15, 2025, no concrete change occurred in the war, and the situation worsened.

Trump had previously stated that his objective was to establish a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, and that Russia would face severe consequences if it did not comply. However, Putin did not alter his stance after this meeting, and the war escalated.

Meeting in Alaska

This meeting in Alaska was viewed as a significant diplomatic effort on the international stage. The meeting between Trump and Putin was described as a "new turn" in the Russia-Ukraine war. Trump stated that several points were discussed and the meeting was very productive.

However, the reality was quite different. The very next day after the meeting, on August 16, Russia intensified its drone and missile attacks on Ukraine. Ukraine's air defense systems intercepted many attacks, but several attacks were successful, causing damage to civilians and infrastructure.

Russia Carries Out Major Attacks

Following the meeting on August 15, the Russia-Ukraine conflict continuously escalated. On August 20 and 21, Russia launched its third-largest attacks. Over 500 drones and 40 missiles were used in these attacks.

On August 28, 2025, Russia attacked Kyiv, using 629 drones and missiles. The European Union building was also affected in the attack. Ukraine also launched retaliatory strikes, further deepening the conflict.

Trump's Diplomacy Limited to Statements

After the meeting, Trump stated that while no concrete ceasefire had been reached, an agreement was made on several points. Experts believe that stopping a major war is not possible merely through the statements of a leader like Trump. Deep strategic and political interests exist between Russia and Ukraine, which are not influenced by mere rhetoric.

Previously, Trump had claimed to have brokered a ceasefire between India and Pakistan during "Operation Sindoor." However, the same situation is now being witnessed in Russia-Ukraine.
