US Open 2025: Keys Suffers Shock Exit, Kvitova Retires After First-Round Loss

The tennis world witnessed two major upsets in the first round of the US Open 2025. Australian Open champion Madison Keys was knocked out of the tournament in the first round itself by Renata Zarazúa of Mexico, ranked 82nd. Meanwhile, two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova bid farewell to her tennis career after her first-round defeat to Diane Parry at the US Open.

Simultaneously, two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova also bid adieu to international tennis after her first-round loss to Diane Parry.

Madison Keys' Upset in the First Round

Sixth-seeded Madison Keys made several errors during the match. She committed a total of 89 unforced errors and 14 double faults. Keys suffered a 7-6, 6-7, 5-6 defeat in the match. This loss shocked tennis fans because Keys was the Australian Open champion this season and was considered a b contender at the US Open.

Some other exciting matches were also seen in the first round. Brazil's 19-year-old João Fonseca defeated Miomir Kecmanović 7-6, 7-6, 6-3 on his debut. Canada's 18-year-old Vicki Mboko defeated two-time Grand Slam winner Barbora Krejcikova 6-3, 6-2. Caroline Garcia, who reached the semi-finals in 2022, was knocked out of her career's last tournament by Kamilla Rakhimova 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.

Petra Kvitova Bids Farewell to Tennis

Two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova was defeated by Diane Parry 6-1, 6-0 in the first round. Kvitova became emotional after the match and her eyes filled with tears. Her husband and coach, Jiří Vaněk, who was present in the stands, hugged her. Kvitova had already confirmed that the US Open 2025 would be the last tournament of her career. 

She stated that she had considered withdrawing from the US Open a few weeks ago due to a COVID-19 infection. She further added, "As soon as I woke up in the morning, I felt that something was not right. I was nervous and could not do anything. This experience was very difficult for me."

Kvitova's Career 

  • Wimbledon 2011: Won the title by defeating Maria Sharapova. 
  • Wimbledon 2014: Won the title for the second time by defeating Eugenie Bouchard.
  • Australian Open 2019: Lost to Naomi Osaka in the final.

In December 2016, she was attacked with a knife by an intruder at her home, resulting in a long surgery and recovery process. Kvitova has achieved many major victories in her career and is considered an inspiration in the tennis world.
