The West Bengal Board of Secondary Education (WBBSE) has announced a significant change regarding summer vacations for the 2026 academic year. The duration of the summer break has been reduced from 11 days to just 6 days, effective from May 11th to May 17th, and will apply to all schools recognized by the board. This decision aims to alleviate academic pressure on students and promote a more balanced academic session.
WBBSE Summer Vacation Update: The WBBSE has implemented a notable adjustment for the upcoming academic year. The summer break will now span only from May 11th to May 17th, encompassing all board-recognized schools. The board’s rationale behind this change is to reduce the academic burden on students and maintain a more balanced educational calendar. Furthermore, the supplementary sheets for the 12th board examination have been discontinued, and the mandatory signing of answer booklets by examiners or invigilators has been introduced. This measure is intended to ensure greater transparency and fairness within the examination process, minimizing the potential for plagiarism or marking irregularities.
Reduction in Summer Vacations
The West Bengal Board of Secondary Education (WBBSE) has implemented a reduction in the duration of summer vacations for 2026. The summer break period has been shortened from 11 days to just 6 days. According to the new guidelines, the summer break will now run from May 11th to May 17th. The board states that this adjustment is designed to balance the academic year and reduce the pressure on students’ studies.
This decision will be applicable to all schools recognized by the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education. However, the announcement has elicited mixed reactions from parents and educators. The board emphasizes the need to maintain a defined total number of holidays throughout the year, leading to the reduction in summer vacation time.

Extended Holidays for Festivals
Despite the shortened summer break, the board has extended the duration of holidays during festival periods. Students will now receive a continuous 25-day break for major festivals such as Durga Puja, Kali Puja, and Bhai Phonta.
This change will provide both students and teachers with much-needed mental respite and increased opportunities to spend time with their families. It will also allow schools and teaching staff to operate under a less pressured schedule, fostering a better balance between academic work and relaxation for students.
Changes to Examination and Academic Procedures
The WBBSE has also made significant changes to the examination process for the 12th class board examination. Supplementary sheets for the 2026 examination have been completely eliminated. Students will now be restricted to answering solely within the provided answer booklet.
Moreover, the signing of answer booklets by examiners or invigilators is now mandatory. Any answer booklet lacking signatures on any page will be deemed invalid. This measure is being implemented to enhance the transparency and impartiality of the examination process, thereby minimizing the risk of cheating or inaccurate marking.
