Sahni acted alongside Raj Babbar, Pankaj Kapur, Kanwaljit Singh, and Deepti Naval in the classic Punjabi film, Marhi Da Diwa (1989). He also played a notable role in the Hindi film Pavitra Papi (1970), which was based on a Punjabi novel
Sahni's parents were both theatre and film actors, although his mother appeared in only a few films before her untimely death in 1947 at a young age. Following her death, his father remarried Santosh Chandok two years later.
He was born in Murree, Rawalpindi District, Punjab Province, British India (present-day Murree District, Punjab, Pakistan), into a Punjabi Hindu family, while his father, Ravindranath, was teaching English at Visva-Bharati University in Santiniketan.
