Mace used this incident to advocate for stricter laws against video voyeurism in Congress. She stated that she was speaking not only as a congresswoman but also as a victim.
"Freedom is not a theory, it's a right"
Speaking before Congress, the South Carolina representative stated, "Freedom is not a theory. It means that no one should take a video or picture of you without your permission while you are sleeping. I am not just a congresswoman here, but a victim."
She explained that she was unaware her photograph was being taken and that this action, taken without her consent, constituted a serious crime.
Accusations of rape and sexual assault against former fiancé
Mace's accusations extended beyond the unauthorized photograph. She levied serious charges against her former fiancé, including sexual assault, rape, and domestic abuse. She stated that she endured prolonged abuse and that it was time for b action to be taken.
Bryant denies accusations as false and defamatory
Patrick Bryant responded to the allegations, categorically denying Mace's claims as "false and defamatory."
Bryant stated, "I have never taken a picture of anyone without their consent. I have not sexually assaulted any woman. Nancy Mace is abusing her position." He also claimed he is cooperating fully with investigating agencies and that the truth will soon emerge.
Prior accusations
This is not the first time Mace has accused her former fiancé. In February 2025, she also accused Bryant and three of his business partners of sexual assault and abuse, alleging misconduct not only against herself but also against underage girls. The South Carolina State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) is currently investigating this matter.
Emphasis on video voyeurism laws
Through this incident, Mace is highlighting the need for ber laws against video voyeurism. She argued that in today's digital age, with mobile phones ubiquitous, the potential for such crimes is greatly amplified.
She emphasized that without stricter laws, women would feel unsafe and perpetrators would be emboldened.
