Dr. Ajay Kumar Appointed New Chairman of India's UPSC

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has a new chairman. The central government has appointed Dr. Ajay Kumar, former Defence Secretary of India, to lead the commission.

UPSC Chairman: The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has finally received new leadership. The central government appointed Dr. Ajay Kumar, a former Defence Secretary and senior IAS officer, as the new chairman of the UPSC. After receiving approval from President Droupadi Murmu, Dr. Kumar assumed the responsibilities of this prestigious post. The position became vacant on April 29, 2025, upon the completion of the term of the then chairperson, Preeti Sudan.

Who is Dr. Ajay Kumar?

Dr. Ajay Kumar is a retired IAS officer of the Kerala cadre, 1985 batch. He has held several key positions throughout his administrative career. Notably, he served as the Defence Secretary of India from August 23, 2019, to October 31, 2022. During this tenure, he made significant contributions to defence procurement, promoting indigenous military technology, and formulating national security policies.

Under his leadership, the Ministry of Defence expedited several major projects, including numerous initiatives towards indigenizing defence production under the 'Make in India' initiative. His administrative experience, strategic understanding, and technical perspective are considered invaluable assets for an institution like the UPSC.

Tenure as UPSC Chairman

According to the notification issued by the Ministry of Personnel, Dr. Ajay Kumar's appointment is for six years or until he attains the age of 65, whichever is earlier. The commission currently has 10 members, but two positions are vacant and are expected to be filled soon. The UPSC is one of India's most prestigious constitutional bodies, responsible for selecting candidates for top positions like IAS, IPS, IFS, and IRS. Lakhs of young people participate in this examination every year. Therefore, it is crucial for the commission to function impartially, transparently, and efficiently.

The appointment of an experienced officer like Dr. Ajay Kumar is expected to make the commission's operations more modern, technologically advanced, and transparent. Furthermore, it is anticipated that there will be an emphasis on improving the examination system, utilizing digital technology more effectively, and implementing new measures to assist candidates.

Chairman's Salary

The chairman of the Union Public Service Commission receives a monthly salary of ₹2,50,000, considered among the highest for top constitutional positions in the country. Other UPSC members receive a monthly salary of ₹2,25,000. This salary structure is determined by the President and does not include any allowances. Dr. Ajay Kumar's appointment comes at a time when there is a constant need for improvements in transparency, timeliness, and impartiality in UPSC examinations.
