Uttar Pradesh Government Increases Employees' DA to 55%

The Yogi government has increased the Dearness Allowance (DA) for its employees from 53% to 55%. The enhanced allowance, including arrears, will be disbursed in May 2025, resulting in a salary increase for lakhs of employees.

DA Hike Update: The Uttar Pradesh government has approved a 2% increase in the Dearness Allowance (DA) for state employees and pensioners. Employees will now receive a 55% DA, up from the previous 53%. This increase will be effective from January 1, 2025, with payment to be made in May 2025 along with April's salary.

CM Yogi Announces Hike

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced this decision via the social media platform X. He stated that the state government prioritizes the welfare of its employees. This decision will not be limited to regular government employees but will also apply to regular employees of aided educational and technical institutions, urban body employees, ad-hoc employees, and those working on UGC pay scales. In total, approximately 1.6 million employees and pensioners will benefit.

Arrears Payable in May; ₹300 Crore Financial Burden

The April 2025 salary, including the increased allowance, will be paid in May. Additionally, arrears from January to April will also be paid simultaneously in May. Reports indicate this will impose an additional burden of approximately ₹107 crore on the state government in May, with the arrears adding a further ₹193 crore.

Benefit for Employees with ₹18,000 Basic Salary?

For an employee with a basic salary of ₹18,000:

53% DA = ₹9,540

55% DA = ₹9,900

Difference = ₹360 per month

Similarly, an employee with a basic salary of ₹50,000 will see their DA increase from ₹26,500 to ₹27,500, a ₹1,000 increase.

State Follows Central Government's Lead

Recently, the central government also announced a 2% increase in DA and DR (Dearness Relief) for its employees and pensioners. Following tradition, state governments typically adopt similar decisions after the central government. The UP government's decision aligns with this practice.

Understanding Dearness Allowance (DA) and Dearness Relief (DR)

Dearness Allowance (DA) is the amount paid to active employees, added to their basic salary, to mitigate the impact of inflation. Dearness Relief (DR) is paid to retired employees to similarly offset the effects of inflation on their pensions.
