New Delhi: The three-day session of the Delhi Legislative Assembly commences today, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) assuming the role of the ruling party for the first time in 27 years. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), after a decade in power, will now be in opposition. This historic shift will also see the swearing-in of newly elected MLAs and the election of the Speaker.

What will happen on the first day?

On February 24th, at 11:00 AM, the Assembly session will begin. First, Protem Speaker Arvinder Singh Lovely will administer the oath of office to the 70 newly elected MLAs. Following this, at 2:00 PM, the election of the Speaker will take place. BJP veteran Vijender Gupta has filed his nomination and is expected to be elected unopposed. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta will propose his name, seconded by Cabinet Ministers Manjinder Singh Sirsa and Ravinder Inder Raj.

What will happen in the Assembly on the second day?

On February 25th, the second day of the session, Lieutenant Governor V.K. Saxena will address the Assembly, outlining the Delhi government's priorities and future plans. Additionally, 14 pending CAG reports from the AAP government's tenure will be tabled. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta will move a vote of thanks on the LG's address.

Anticipation of Uproar on the third day

While February 26th will be a holiday for the Assembly, February 27th will see a discussion on the LG's address and the election of the Deputy Speaker. Significant disruption is anticipated on this day. The AAP, now in opposition, plans to remind the BJP government of its election promises. Led by party leader Atishi, AAP MLAs are prepared to corner the government on issues such as the BJP's promise of a monthly allowance of ₹2500 for women and other key pledges.

Significant Challenges for the BJP Government

The presentation of the CAG reports will be a key event for the BJP government in Delhi. During the election campaign, the BJP promised to make public the CAG reports from the AAP's tenure, which were previously suppressed. Now, these reports will be debated in the Assembly, potentially leading to aggressive responses from the opposition regarding the government's anti-corruption stance.

Historic Session, Change in Power, and Future Strategies

After 27 years, the BJP has returned to power in Delhi, and this session will offer the first glimpse into the government's functioning. With a well-prepared opposition, this session is expected to be highly eventful and politically significant.
