Farooq Abdullah defends Speaker's decision to not debate the Waqf Amendment Bill in the Assembly, citing the matter's pending status in court and accusing the opposition of political maneuvering.
Jammu-Kashmir: National Conference President Farooq Abdullah has justified the Assembly Speaker's decision not to allow a debate on the Waqf Amendment Bill. He stated that the matter is sub judice and therefore, debating it at this juncture would be inappropriate.
Hurt sentiments of the Muslim community
Farooq Abdullah stated that his party opposes the Waqf Bill and its passage has hurt the sentiments of the Muslim community. However, he also added that since the matter is before the Supreme Court, they will await the court's decision and refrain from any debate until then.
Accusation of political opportunism against the opposition
Abdullah targeted opposition parties, alleging they are using the issue for political gain and attempting to corner the National Conference. He clarified his party's stance: they oppose the Waqf Bill but will await the court's verdict.
Awaiting the court's decision in silence
Farooq Abdullah said, "We will not create a ruckus or uproar. We are quietly awaiting the Supreme Court's decision, and we are confident that the court, understanding the gravity of the issue, will deliver a just verdict."
Previous uproar in the Assembly over the Waqf Bill
Earlier, the Waqf Bill had caused a significant uproar in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly. Opposition parties, including the PDP, AAP, Awami Ittehad Party, and others, had demanded a debate on the bill. However, Assembly Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather disallowed the debate, citing the matter's pendency in the Supreme Court.
