Historic 2025 Budget Session Concludes: 16 Bills Passed, High Productivity

The 2025 Budget Session of Parliament proved historic. Spanning nearly two months, the session saw the passage of several crucial bills, laying the groundwork for significant changes in the country's governance. A total of 16 bills, including the Wakf (Amendment) Bill-2025, were passed by both houses.

New Delhi: Parliament's Budget Session concluded on Friday, having commenced on January 31st. During this session, a total of 16 bills were passed, including the Wakf Amendment Bill. According to the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs, the productivity of the Lok Sabha was 118 percent and that of the Rajya Sabha was 119 percent. A press conference was held at the session's conclusion by the Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Minority Affairs, Kiren Rijiju, along with the Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Law and Justice and Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs, Arjun Ram Meghwal, and the Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting and Parliamentary Affairs, L Murugan.

Session Commenced January 31st, Total 26 Sittings

The session began on January 31st with the President's Address. This address, under Article 87(1) of the Constitution, forms part of the first session of Parliament. This Budget Session comprised a total of 26 sittings, including 9 in the first phase and 17 in the second.

Impressive Productivity of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha

According to the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs, the Lok Sabha recorded a productivity of 118%, and the Rajya Sabha, 119%. The motion of thanks on the President's Address saw participation from 173 members in the Lok Sabha, with the discussion lasting 17 hours and 23 minutes. In the Rajya Sabha, the debate lasted 21 hours and 46 minutes, with participation from 73 members.

Wakf (Amendment) Bill Takes Center Stage

The Wakf Amendment Bill-2025, introduced to ensure transparent management and legal reforms of Wakf properties, was one of the most discussed bills of this session. The bill not only generated record debate but also repealed the Muslim Wakf Act-1923. The bill aims to simplify and make more transparent the processes of surveying, registering, and resolving disputes related to Wakf properties.

Other Significant Bills Passed

1. Disaster Management (Amendment) Bill-2025: This bill grants enhanced powers and clarifies the roles of national and state-level disaster management authorities.
2. Tribhuvan Cooperative University Bill-2025: This new university will promote the development, training, and research in the cooperative sector. It will also offer e-learning and degree programs.
3. Banking Law (Amendment) Bill-2025: This bill marks significant steps towards strengthening transparency and the regulatory framework in the banking sector.
4. Immigration and Foreigners Bill-2025: This legislation represents a major effort to strengthen and modernize immigration policies.
