India's External Affairs Minister, S. Jaishankar, criticized the United Nations' (UN) role in the Kashmir issue. He asserted that the UN gravely erred in its handling of the Kashmir matter, and the consequences are still evident today.
New Delhi: India's External Affairs Minister, S. Jaishankar, has questioned the UN's role in the Kashmir issue. He stated that the UN seriously failed in properly addressing the Kashmir problem, and the repercussions are still visible. Speaking at the Raisina Dialogue in New Delhi, Jaishankar also criticized Western nations for applying double standards on this issue, hindering justice and forcing India to endure decades of terrorism and instability.
'Western Nations' Approach to Kashmir is Biased'
Jaishankar stated that Jammu and Kashmir, including Gilgit and Baltistan, acceded to India in 1947. However, Pakistan launched a unilateral military attack, illegally occupying parts of the region, a situation that persists to this day. He questioned the UN's lack of impartiality, highlighting how Western nations reframed the issue from a 'violation of sovereignty' to a mere 'dispute'.
The External Affairs Minister explicitly named countries complicit in this misjudgment regarding Kashmir. He said, "Countries like the UK, Canada, Belgium, Australia, and the US recast the Kashmir invasion as a dispute, placing the aggressor (Pakistan) and the victim (India) on equal footing." Jaishankar urged international organizations to seriously reconsider their stance on this matter.
'The UN Must Remain Impartial' - S. Jaishankar
Emphasizing the UN's role, Jaishankar stated, "If we want a b UN, we must ensure impartiality." He added that the stability of fundamental principles is crucial for an effective global system, ensuring no nation can challenge the international order.
He cited Myanmar as an example, noting that while Western nations condemn its military regime, they remain silent on severe violations in neighboring countries. Jaishankar's comment alluded to Pakistan and other nations that foster terrorism and instability.
Jaishankar reiterated India's consistent support for sovereignty, impartiality, and a just global order. He urged international organizations to change their approach and abandon biased stances. The External Affairs Minister's criticism of the UN and Western nations' silence strengthens India's diplomatic position.
