Srinagar: Life in Jammu and Kashmir has been completely disrupted by heavy snowfall and rainfall. The Srinagar-Jammu National Highway and several other important roads are closed, impacting rail and air services. The situation is further aggravated by snowfall in higher reaches of the valley, increasing the risk of avalanches and landslides.

Road Closures Due to Snow and Landslides Cause Hardship

Overnight heavy snowfall and rainfall have disrupted the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway at various points due to landslides and falling rocks. Significant ice accumulation on the road between Ramsoo and Kazigund has halted traffic. Major roads like Mughal Road, Srinagar-Leh Highway, and SSG Road are also closed due to snowfall.

Impact on Air and Rail Services

All morning flights at Srinagar Airport were affected due to the inclement weather. However, flights resumed from 11 am after a slight improvement in weather conditions. Meanwhile, train services on the Baramulla-Badgam rail route have been disrupted due to heavy snowfall, causing significant inconvenience to passengers.

Two Deaths Reported Due to Heavy Rainfall

Continuous rainfall caused a major accident on the Jammu-Punch National Highway. In the Surankote area, a large rock fell from a hillside onto an SUV, killing the driver instantly. Separately, a 14-year-old boy died tragically in Reasi district while attempting to cross a swollen stream.

The meteorological department forecasts an improvement in the situation within the next 24 hours. However, the administration remains on high alert. Heavy machinery is being used to clear snow-blocked roads to restore vehicular movement as quickly as possible.
