West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has called for astronaut Sunita Williams to be awarded the Bharat Ratna after her safe return to Earth. In her address to the state assembly on Wednesday, Banerjee praised Williams' courage, perseverance, and ability to overcome challenges. She advocated for this honour, also referencing India's late astronaut Kalpana Chawla, who perished during a space mission.

Sunita Williams' Space Journey

Sunita Williams embarked on her space journey on June 5th of the previous year. This mission to the International Space Station (ISS) was initially scheduled for only eight days, but due to technical malfunctions, it extended to nine months. Repeated technical issues with the spacecraft caused several postponements of her return to Earth. After spending approximately 286 days in space, she successfully returned to Earth at 3:27 AM (IST) on Wednesday.

This long and arduous journey not only set an example in the field of space science but also brought Williams greater global recognition. Mamata Banerjee stated, "Our daughter of India has returned safely. Her courage and perseverance have filled us with pride."

Opposition's Criticism and Allegations

The Chief Minister's demand has drawn b reactions from the opposition. The Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, accused Mamata Banerjee of incorrectly referring to Sunita Williams as "Sunita Chawla." Adhikari stated, "It is a blemish on Bengal's reputation that the state's Chief Minister cannot even correctly name an internationally renowned individual. She should publicly apologize."

Adhikari's statement has intensified the debate in political circles. Some attribute it to the Chief Minister's ignorance, while others see it as a political manoeuvre.

Political Perspectives

The demand to award Sunita Williams the Bharat Ratna has sparked debate in political circles. Many experts believe this demand is a positive step in recognizing the country's scientific achievements, while others view it as an attempt to gain political advantage.
