New Delhi – Following the Enforcement Directorate (ED)'s filing of a chargesheet in the National Herald money laundering case, the Congress party has launched a campaign against the central government. Protests have begun outside ED offices across the country after the chargesheet was filed against Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Sam Pitroda, and Suman Dubey.
Protests from Delhi to the District Level
Congress workers began their protests Wednesday morning from the AICC headquarters in Delhi. Subsequently, workers took to the streets, shouting slogans outside ED and central government offices. Nationwide protests, including those at the district level in several states, were organized, resulting in the arrest of some Congress leaders.
Congress Alleges Misuse of ED
Congress alleges that the Modi government is misusing investigative agencies to suppress the opposition. Party General Secretary K.C. Venugopal stated, "Prime Minister Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah are employing politics of intimidation against opposition leaders. We will not be intimidated."
ED Freezes Assets Worth ₹661 Crore
The ED has also issued an order to seize immovable properties worth approximately ₹661 crore in Delhi, Mumbai, and Lucknow in this case. The agency stated that these properties are linked to suspicious transactions and are part of the investigation.
What is the National Herald Case?
This case originated in 2012 when BJP leader Subramanian Swamy accused Sonia and Rahul Gandhi, along with other Congress leaders, of financial irregularities in transactions related to the National Herald Newspaper. The next hearing in this case is scheduled for April 25, 2025, at the Rouse Avenue Court in Delhi, where the court has also requested the case diary from the ED.
A Conspiracy to Target the Opposition – Pratapgarh
Congress MP Imran Pratapgarhi criticized the central government, stating, "The chargesheet was filed while Rahul Gandhi was in Modasa, Gujarat. This is a well-planned strategy."
Congress leader Sachin Pilot also reacted to the issue. He said, "This is a completely politically motivated case. We have faith in the judiciary and will legally address this case."
