Prime Minister Narendra Modi is undertaking a significant visit to Sri Lanka from April 4th to 6th. Several crucial agreements between India and Sri Lanka are expected to be signed during this visit, particularly in the defense and energy sectors.

New Delhi: A significant step is being taken to bolster defense cooperation between India and Sri Lanka. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be visiting Sri Lanka from April 4th to 6th. A defense agreement is anticipated during this visit, strengthening regional security and strategic ties. Agreements are also expected in several other sectors, including energy, health, and digitalization.

PM Modi's visit coincides with Sri Lanka's gradual economic recovery. This visit will provide an opportunity for both nations to explore new avenues of mutual cooperation.

A New Chapter in Defense Cooperation

The most significant aspect of Prime Minister Modi's visit will be the defense agreement. This will be the first such agreement between India and Sri Lanka, taking their strategic relationship to new heights. The framework for this agreement was finalized during Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe's visit to India in December 2024.

Defense cooperation will focus on naval exercises and training of Sri Lankan troops by the Indian army. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri stated that this agreement will strengthen the strategic capabilities of both nations.

Focus on Energy and Digital Connectivity

Besides defense, several initiatives concerning energy sector cooperation will be discussed. India is assisting Sri Lanka in several energy security projects. In Colombo, Prime Minister Modi and President Wickremesinghe will jointly inaugurate the Sampur Solar Power Project. This project is expected to significantly alleviate Sri Lanka's power problems.

Both countries may also sign an agreement to improve digital connectivity. India will also support new projects in Sri Lanka to enhance health sector cooperation.

Discussions on Investment and Debt Restructuring

India will also emphasize boosting investment in Sri Lanka and finalizing debt restructuring agreements. India is already actively playing a co-chair role in the Official Creditors Committee. Both countries will also discuss new financial collaborations under debt restructuring.

Boosting Cultural Ties

India and Sri Lanka share deep-rooted cultural ties. Prime Minister Modi's visit will provide a new impetus to these cultural exchanges. The program includes cultural and social events between the two countries.

Prime Minister Modi's Schedule

Prime Minister Modi will arrive in Colombo on the evening of April 4th. On April 5th, he will hold official talks with the Sri Lankan President and inaugurate various projects. During the visit, the Prime Minister will also meet other political leaders. Prime Minister Modi's visit is a significant step towards strengthening India-Sri Lanka relations.
