WhatsApp Bans Over 9.7 Million Accounts in India for Violating Platform Rules
Last Updated: 22 hour ago

WhatsApp has banned over 9.7 million accounts in India, as announced in their February 2025 safety report. The company stated that these accounts were terminated for violating platform rules. Notably, 1.4 million of these accounts were identified and banned by their AI-powered moderation system without any user reports.

Why Were So Many Accounts Banned?

The report indicates that many of the banned accounts were involved in fraudulent activities, spamming, and misuse. WhatsApp employs an automated system, enhanced by artificial intelligence and advanced reporting tools, to detect and address suspicious activity. A WhatsApp spokesperson stated, "We prioritize our users' safety and are heavily investing in AI and other technologies to prevent misuse. Our goal is to maintain WhatsApp as a secure platform."

Action Taken Under IT Rules

The company clarified that this action is in accordance with the Indian government's IT Rules 2021. They added that a significant number of the banned accounts were reported by users themselves. WhatsApp maintains a robust grievance redressal system to address accounts violating platform regulations.

Types of Accounts Banned

According to WhatsApp's report, the banned accounts were primarily involved in:

• Spamming: Sending unsolicited messages
• Use of Third-Party Apps: Misusing WhatsApp through unauthorized applications
• Adding to Unwanted Groups: Adding individuals to groups without their consent
• Spreading Misinformation: Disseminating fake news or rumors

Could Your Account Be Banned?

Non-compliance with WhatsApp's terms of service can lead to account bans. To avoid such situations, the company recommends:

• Do not use third-party apps (like GB WhatsApp).
• Do not add unknown individuals to groups without their permission.
• Do not spread spam or fake news.
• Refrain from engaging in any suspicious activity.

WhatsApp's Strict Stance: Further Tightening Expected

WhatsApp has made it clear that it will not tolerate any misuse of its platform. The AI moderation system may become even stricter in the future, potentially leading to more account actions. Users whose accounts have been banned can appeal through the WhatsApp Help Center. However, reinstatement may be difficult if the account was banned for violating platform rules.
