Sports News: Congress leader Shuma Mohammed's recent comments about Rohit Sharma have sparked a significant controversy on social media. She referred to Rohit as an "overweight player," questioning his fitness. In response, former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar rejected this comment as unreasonable.

Shuma Mohammed posted on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) that Rohit Sharma doesn't appear fit as a player and needs to lose weight. She also stated that his captaincy is ineffective. However, after the controversy escalated, she deleted her tweet, but not before it went viral on social media.

Gavaskar's Counter-Response: 'Cricket is a Game of Mental Strength'

Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar has clearly expressed his opinion on this matter. He explicitly stated that cricket doesn't solely depend on physical fitness; it's a game of mental strength and technical skill. Speaking to India Today, he said: “If only slim players are to be included in the team, then players should be selected from modeling competitions.”

He further added that cricket isn't solely determined by physical fitness. He cited the example of Sarfaraz Khan, who was long ignored due to his weight, but silenced critics with his on-field performance. Gavaskar also stated that commenting on a player's physique is inappropriate if that player consistently scores runs and performs for their team. He criticized body-shaming, emphasizing that mental strength and technical skill are the most crucial aspects of cricket.

Fitness vs. Performance in Cricket

This entire controversy has reignited the debate on fitness versus performance in cricket. While physical fitness is undoubtedly important in cricket, can it be the sole measure of a player's success? According to Gavaskar and many other cricket legends, questioning a player's fitness is illogical as long as they perform well on the field.

Following Shuma Mohammed's comments, Rohit Sharma's fans have voiced their support on social media. Fans argue that Rohit has recently led India to victory in several crucial matches and that his captaincy should be evaluated based on his performance.
