A renowned and inspiring tale of the elephant Mahila Mukh
Long ago, in King Chandrasen's stable, lived an elephant named Mahila Mukh. He was known for his intelligence, obedience, and compassion. All the residents of the kingdom were pleased with Mahila Mukh, and the king himself was proud of him. However, a group of thieves set up their hideout outside the stable. They spent their days looting and causing trouble, and nights boasting about their exploits. They meticulously planned their next acts of robbery, sounding menacing in their discussion. Mahila Mukh, the elephant, would hear their conversations.
Over time, the thieves' words began to influence Mahila Mukh. He started believing that cruelty was a sign of strength. He decided to emulate the thieves' behaviour. First, he attacked his mahout, repeatedly beating him to death. This shocking act of violence deeply disturbed everyone. The elephant was no longer manageable. The king, seeing this change in Mahila Mukh, became worried. He sought a new mahout for the elephant.
The new mahout also met a similar fate, brutally killed by the enraged elephant. In this way, the errant elephant killed four mahouts. The reason behind Mahila Mukh's transformation remained a mystery to all. When the king ran out of options, he appointed a wise physician to treat Mahila Mukh. He urged the physician to cure the elephant as quickly as possible, before the elephant became a threat to the kingdom. The physician took the task seriously and closely monitored the elephant. He soon discovered that the thieves were the cause of the elephant's change in behaviour.
The physician advised the king to hold regular religious gatherings at the thieves' hideout. He believed that this would restore Mahila Mukh to his previous compassionate nature. The king followed this advice. The gatherings began regularly outside the elephant's stable. Gradually, Mahila Mukh's mental state improved. In a short time, the elephant returned to his former benevolent and kind nature. King Chandrasen was overjoyed to have his beloved elephant back to his former self. He praised the physician in his court and generously rewarded him.
The lesson from this story is: Association profoundly influences a person. Therefore, it is crucial to be around virtuous individuals and treat everyone with respect.
