Presenting the famous and inspiring story of the Six-Tusked Elephant
Long ago, in the dense jungles of the Himalayas, two special elephant species existed. One was the Six-Tusked, and the other was called the Uposth. Of these, the Six-Tusked species was quite renowned. They were called Six-Tusked because of their impressive array of six tusks. Their heads and legs shone a brilliant crimson, like jewels. The king of these Six-Tusked elephants resided in the Kanchan Cave. He had two queens, Mahasubhaddha and Chullsabhaddha. One day, the elephant king, along with his two queens, went to bathe in a nearby lake. Beside the lake stood an ancient, towering tree. The blossoms on the tree were exceptionally beautiful and fragrant. In playfulness, the elephant king, Gajraj, swung a branch of the tree with his trunk. Blossoms rained down on Mahasubhaddha, and she was very pleased. Unfortunately, the old branch, unable to withstand the force of the elephant's trunk, broke, falling, along with the flowers, onto Chullsabhaddha, the other queen.
Though accidental, Chullsabhaddha interpreted this as an insult. She immediately left Gajraj's dwelling, heading far away. When Gajraj learned of her departure, he searched diligently but found her nowhere. Time passed, and Chullsabhaddha eventually died. In her next life, she was reborn as a princess in the Madd kingdom. As an adult, she married the King of Varanasi and became the queen. Even after reincarnation, she carried the memory of the perceived insult, seeking revenge against Gajraj. One day, she orchestrated the king's desire to acquire Gajraj's tusks. Consequently, a group of skilled hunters, led by Sonuttara, was sent to retrieve them. Sonuttara travelled for about seven years to reach Gajraj's dwelling.
He dug a large pit some distance from Gajraj's residence, intending to capture him. He concealed the pit with leaves and small branches, then hid himself in the bushes. As Gajraj approached the pit, Sonuttara aimed a poisoned arrow at the Six-Tusked king. Wounded, Gajraj's gaze fell upon Sonuttara, hidden in the bushes, and he prepared to attack. However, Sonuttara was dressed in the robes of a monk. This moved Gajraj's compassion, and he spared Sonuttara's life. Touched by this act of mercy, Sonuttara confessed his true intentions and purpose. Because he had received life, Sonuttara could not take the tusks. Gajraj, in an act of self-sacrifice, broke off his tusks and offered them to Sonuttara before his own death. With the tusks in hand, Sonuttara returned to Varanasi and presented them before the queen. He also recounted how Gajraj had given him his life and then his own tusks. Upon learning the full truth, the queen was overwhelmed with grief and sorrow, succumbing to the shock of Gajraj's death.
This story teaches us that – The desire for revenge can diminish our ability to think and reason.
