Long ago, in the Himalayas, there was a renowned lake called Mansarovar. A flock of swans resided there alongside numerous other animals and birds. Two of these swans were exceptionally beautiful, virtually identical in appearance, yet one was the king, and the other, the general. The king was Dhritarashtra, and the general, Sumukha. The view of the lake, nestled amidst the clouds, resembled paradise. The fame of the lake and its swans, renowned throughout the land and abroad, spread with the arrival of tourists. Many poets sang of its beauty, which inspired the king of Varanasi to desire to see this magnificent sight. The king had a lake built in his kingdom, mirroring the beauty of Mansarovar, and planted various beautiful flowering plants and fruit-bearing trees. He also ordered arrangements for the care and protection of diverse animal and bird species.
This lake in Varanasi was equally magnificent, but the king still yearned to see the two swans residing in Mansarovar. One day, other swans from Mansarovar expressed their desire to visit the Varanasi lake, but the swan king, wise and insightful, understood the dangers. He knew that if they ventured there, the king of Varanasi might capture them. He forbade the swans from going, but they refused to listen. So the king and the general, along with the other swans, embarked on their journey to Varanasi. As the flock reached the lake, the magnificent appearance of the renowned two swans outshone all others. Their gold-like beaks, golden legs, and wings whiter than clouds, captivated everyone. News of the swans' arrival reached the king. He devised a plan to capture them. One night, while everyone slept, nets were set to trap the swans.
The next morning, when the swan king awoke and ventured out, he found himself entangled in the nets. He immediately urged the other swans to flee and save their lives with loud cries. All the swans took flight, but General Sumukha, seeing his master trapped, stayed behind to protect him. Meanwhile, a soldier arrived to apprehend the swans. He saw the swan king trapped in the net, and the general standing guard. The soldier was deeply moved by the swan's loyalty and released the swan king. The swan king, besides being wise, was also far-sighted. He realised that if the king discovered the soldier's act of mercy, the soldier would surely face punishment. He then asked the soldier to take them to his king.
The soldier, upon hearing this, took them to the royal court. The sight of the swans perched on the soldier's shoulder surprised everyone. When the king inquired about the circumstances, the soldier truthfully recounted everything. The king and the entire court were amazed by the soldier's courage and the general's devotion. Their hearts filled with admiration for the swans. The king forgave the soldier and requested that the swans stay for a few more days. The swans accepted the king's request, remained for a while, and then returned to the Mansarovar Lake.
This story teaches us: We should never abandon our loved ones in any situation.
