Presenting the inspiring tale of Tenali Rama: The Guilty Goat

As usual, King Krishnadevaraya sat in his court. A herdsman arrived, seeking justice. The king inquired about the matter. The herdsman explained, "Your Majesty, I have suffered a great injustice. A wall collapsed near my home, and my goat perished under the rubble. However, the owner refuses to compensate me for my loss." Before the king could respond, Tenali Rama stood up and said, "While the wall's collapse caused the goat's death, the sole neighbour cannot be held entirely responsible."

The courtiers and ministers were surprised by Tenali Rama's statement. The king immediately asked, "Then, who according to you is responsible for the wall's collapse?" Tenali Rama replied, "I do not know, but if you grant me some time, I will uncover the truth." The king approved of Tenali Rama's suggestion and granted him time to investigate. Following the king's order, Tenali Rama summoned the herdsman's neighbour and requested compensation for the deceased goat. The neighbour pleaded, "I am not responsible. The mason constructed the wall; he should be held accountable."

Tenali Rama found the neighbour's statement plausible and summoned the mason who had built the wall. The mason also denied responsibility, stating, "I am being unfairly blamed. The actual culprits are the laborers who compromised the mortar by adding excessive water, weakening the wall's structure and leading to its collapse." The king ordered soldiers to bring the laborers before him. When presented with the evidence, the laborers claimed, "We are not at fault; the person who added excess water to the mortar is responsible."

The king dispatched messengers to find the individual who had mixed excessive water into the mortar. The individual, upon reaching the court, stated, "The person who provided me the container for mixing the mortar bears the primary responsibility. The container was too large, making it difficult to judge the appropriate water-to-mortar ratio, leading to the excess water." When questioned by Tenali Rama, the person added, "The herdsman himself supplied the large container; it was the cause of the excess water in the mortar, contributing to the wall's weakness." Tenali Rama turned to the herdsman and declared, "You are the one at fault. Your actions resulted in the goat's death." The herdsman, speechless, walked away in shame. The courtiers praised Tenali Rama's wisdom and justice.
