The Enchanting Story of the Magic Donkey

Long ago, Emperor Akbar commissioned a magnificent and precious necklace for his queen's birthday. On the day of her birthday, he presented the necklace as a gift, which his queen adored. The following night, she removed the necklace and placed it in a chest. Days passed, and one day, when she opened the chest to wear the necklace, it was gone. Deeply saddened, she informed Emperor Akbar. Upon hearing this, Akbar ordered his soldiers to search for the necklace, but to no avail. He became convinced that the necklace had been stolen.

Akbar then summoned Birbal to the palace. Upon Birbal's arrival, Akbar recounted the incident and entrusted Birbal with the task of finding the thief. Without delay, Birbal sent messages to all those who worked within the palace to appear before the court. Soon, the court assembled. Akbar, his queen, and all palace employees were present, but Birbal was absent. All waited for Birbal, only to see him arrive at the court with a donkey. Birbal apologized to the Emperor for his tardiness. Everyone wondered why he had brought a donkey to court. Birbal explained that this donkey was his friend, possessing magical abilities. He claimed the donkey could identify the thief who stole the royal necklace.

Birbal led the magical donkey to a nearby room and tied it up. He instructed everyone to enter the room one by one, grab the donkey's tail, and proclaim, "By the Emperor, I have not committed the theft!" Birbal emphasized that their voices should reach the court. Following his instructions, all lined up and went into the room, each grasping the donkey's tail and calling out their innocence. When it came to Birbal's turn, he entered the room and soon emerged.

Birbal then asked everyone to bring their hands forward. He began to smell each person's hands one by one. The people were intrigued and perplexed by this peculiar act. After smelling several hands, Birbal grabbed one hand and exclaimed, "By the Emperor, this servant has committed the theft!" Upon hearing this, Akbar asked, "How could you be so certain that this particular servant stole the necklace? Did the magical donkey reveal the thief's name?" Birbal replied, "By the Emperor, this donkey is not magical; it's just a regular donkey. I merely applied a special perfume to its tail. All the servants held the donkey's tail, except the thief. Consequently, there is no scent of perfume on his hands." The thief was apprehended, and the stolen necklace, along with other items, was recovered. Everyone praised Birbal's cleverness, and the queen rewarded him with gifts from the Emperor.
