Varanasi, also known as Kashi and Banaras, is one of the holiest cities in Hinduism. The city boasts a rich and ancient history and culture. Numerous mythological stories are associated with Varanasi, a prominent one being related to Lord Shiva.
Lord Shiva and the Foundation of Varanasi:
According to the mythology, Varanasi is directly connected to Lord Shiva. It is believed that the city was established by Lord Shiva himself. Once, Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati decided to descend to Earth from Mount Kailash. They sought a serene and sacred place. Their search concluded when they reached a beautiful location on the banks of the Ganga River. They chose this as their abode and named it 'Kashi,' meaning 'the abode of light'.
Lord Shiva declared that every inhabitant of Kashi would be under his protection and would never suffer. It is also believed that those who die in Kashi attain Moksha, liberation from the cycle of rebirth. This is why Varanasi is also known as the city of liberation.
The Legend of Vishnu and Shiva:
Another mythological tale narrates that Lord Vishnu once performed austerities in Kashi. Impressed by his penance, Lord Shiva appeared before him and blessed him. The blessing stated that anyone who bathed in the Ganga and meditated on Shiva in Kashi would attain Moksha. Thus, bathing in the Ganga and worshipping Shiva holds special significance in Varanasi.
The Story of Durga Kund and Durga Temple:
The Durga Kund and Durga Temple in Varanasi also hold a significant mythological tale. It is believed that Mother Durga killed the demon Mahishasura at this very spot. The temple and kund were built in commemoration of this event. Thousands of devotees flock to this temple during Durga Puja every year to pay homage to Mother Durga.
These mythological stories imbue Varanasi with unique religious and cultural significance. It is not only religiously important but also a major center of Indian culture and civilization.
