After prolonged political debate and disagreement, the Wakf Amendment Bill 2024 passed the Lok Sabha. 288 MPs voted in favor of the bill, while 232 voted against it. This crucial bill was passed late Wednesday night after lengthy discussions. While the central government claims the bill is a historic step in the nation's interest, the opposition has criticized it as politically motivated.
The atmosphere in Parliament was tense even before the bill was introduced. While the central government explained the amendment as a crucial decision regarding the transparency and management of Wakf properties, opposition parties portrayed it as a controversial and divisive measure.
Heated Debate in Parliament, Rijiju Clarifies Government's Stance
Facing opposition attacks, Union Minister of Minority Affairs and Parliamentary Affairs, Kiren Rijiju, responded. He stated, "Today is a historic day. This bill will ensure the proper management of Wakf properties in the country and stop irregularities. Those opposing this bill are criticizing it without properly understanding the issue."
However, the opposition's allegations differ. Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav bly criticized the bill, saying, "Within the BJP, there's a competition to see who can be the most hardline. This bill is anti-minority and is merely an attempt to create religious divisions."
Congress also voiced its opposition to the bill. Several party leaders stated, "Necessary amendments could have been made to the previous law regarding Wakf properties, but through this bill, the central government is trying to impose a unilateral decision. This is a completely politically motivated step."
Mamata's Strong Reaction, Opposition Protest Continues
Meanwhile, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee opposed the bill, stating, "One's work is their religion. I respect all religions. Our MPs have protested this bill in Parliament, and we will continue to oppose it. I hope better judgment prevails."
She further added, "The implementation of this bill will harm many people from minority communities. The government should have maintained more transparency regarding this bill."
Despite the opposition's protests inside and outside Parliament, BJP leadership has made it clear that they intend to implement the bill, emphasizing its importance for the proper management of Wakf properties.
Hints of Political Instability, Tough Test in Rajya Sabha
The passage of the Wakf Amendment Bill has sparked renewed debate in the political arena. While the government claims it is an initiative to protect the interests of minority communities, the opposition views it as a unilateral and politically opportunistic move.
All eyes are now on the Rajya Sabha. Getting the bill passed there could be a challenge for the central government. Opposition parties have already indicated that they will take a ber stance against the bill there. Therefore, it remains to be seen how much support the bill receives in the Rajya Sabha and what its long-term impact will be on the nation's politics.
