The Allahabad High Court has sought a detailed report from the government and concerned authorities regarding arms licences issued to prominent political figures and influential individuals in Uttar Pradesh, questioning the basis on which such licences were granted.
During the hearing, the court asked what process had been followed to issue arms licences to individuals against whom serious criminal cases had reportedly been registered or whose public image had remained controversial. A total of 19 individuals are reported to be under scrutiny, including Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, Raghuraj Pratap Singh and Dhananjay Singh.
The court has also asked the administration to clarify whether police verification and other legal procedures were followed at the time of issuing the licences.
Following developments in the case, political discussions have intensified, with opposition parties raising questions over the government, while supporters have described it as part of a legal process.
Arms licences in Uttar Pradesh have been the subject of controversy on several occasions in the past. Allegations have been raised that influential individuals obtain licences more easily, while ordinary citizens are required to undergo a longer process.
Legal experts have stated that the court’s step is being viewed as important as questions have been raised over transparency in the process of issuing arms licences.
The issue has also become a topic of discussion on social media. Several people have expressed support for the court’s action and demanded an impartial investigation, while others have described it as a politically sensitive matter.
The Uttar Pradesh government and the concerned departments are now required to submit a complete report before the court, detailing the circumstances under which licences were issued to the individuals concerned and whether all rules were followed.
Experts have stated that an inquiry conducted under court supervision could result in stricter procedures for issuing arms licences in the future.
The next hearing in the matter is awaited, with attention focused on the High Court’s forthcoming observations.
