Australia defeated Bangladesh by an innings and 51 runs in the second Test in Mackay to level the two-match Test series 1-1. The match ended in two days, with Mitchell Starc taking 10 wickets across Bangladesh’s two innings.
Bangladesh bowled out for 64 in the first innings
Australia won the toss and elected to bowl first. Captain Pat Cummins’ decision was immediately rewarded when Mitchell Starc dismissed Shadman Islam with the first ball of the match.
Bangladesh were bowled out for 64 runs in their first innings. Starc took six wickets for 12 runs from 10 overs, while Pat Cummins claimed three wickets and Josh Hazlewood took one.
Shoriful Islam scored 14 runs and Taijul Islam remained unbeaten on 11. The pair added 25 runs for the final wicket to prevent Bangladesh from being dismissed for an even lower total.
Shoriful Islam takes seven wickets
Australia also faced difficulties during its first innings. Bangladesh fast bowler Shoriful Islam took seven wickets as Australia lost eight wickets for 165 runs.
Shoriful dismissed Cameron Green, Travis Head, Marnus Labuschagne, Steve Smith and other Australian batters. He finished with figures of 7/48, with the performance described as the best by a Bangladesh bowler in a Test outside Bangladesh.
Cameron Green scored 67 runs, while Nathan Lyon remained unbeaten on 32 as Australia reached 210. Australia therefore secured a first-innings lead of 146 runs.
Green dismissal completes Shoriful’s seven-wicket haul
Australia resumed its first innings at 165/8 on the second day. Cameron Green was unbeaten on 51, while Nathan Lyon was on 10.
Shoriful Islam dismissed Green early in the day with an inswinging yorker. The ball struck Green’s pads and Bangladesh reviewed the decision using DRS. The replay showed that the ball was hitting the stumps.
The dismissal completed Shoriful’s seven-wicket haul in the first innings. Josh Hazlewood and Nathan Lyon then helped Australia reach 210.
Bangladesh dismissed for 95 in the second innings
Bangladesh began its second innings 146 runs behind and again lost wickets against the new ball. The team was eventually dismissed for 95 runs.
Mitchell Starc took four wickets in the second innings to complete his 10-wicket match haul. Pat Cummins also took important wickets, while Nathan Lyon contributed to the dismissal of the lower order.
Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto scored 31 runs but was dismissed as Bangladesh’s second-innings total reached 95. Australia subsequently won by an innings and 51 runs.
Starc finishes with 10 wickets
Starc took six wickets for 12 runs in Bangladesh’s first innings and four wickets in the second innings, finishing with 10 wickets in the match.
Australia had entered the second Test after losing the opening Test in Darwin by nine wickets. Bangladesh had taken a 1-0 lead in the two-match series with that victory.
Fast bowlers dominate the Mackay Test
Fast bowlers accounted for much of the wicket-taking in the Mackay Test, with 18 wickets falling on the opening day.
Starc took six wickets as Bangladesh were dismissed for 64, while Shoriful claimed seven wickets in Australia’s first innings.
Cameron Green was Australia’s leading first-innings scorer with 67 runs, while Steve Smith made 42. Bangladesh’s batters were dismissed for 64 and 95 in their two innings.
Test series level at 1-1
Bangladesh won the first Test in Darwin by nine wickets to take a 1-0 lead in the series. Australia then won the second Test in Mackay by an innings and 51 runs to level the two-match series 1-1.
Australia scored 210 in its first innings, while Bangladesh were dismissed for 64 and 95. Starc finished the match with 10 wickets and Shoriful Islam took seven wickets in Australia’s first innings.
