Badrinath Dham Portals Closed for Winter

The portals of Badrinath, the sacred abode of Lord Vishnu located in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, were ceremonially closed for the winter season on Tuesday, November 25, 2025. At 2:56 PM, the temple gates were closed for devotees with Vedic chants and special prayers. With this, this year's Char Dham Yatra officially concluded.

Now, for the next six months, the worship of Lord Badrivishal will be conducted at the Narsingh Temple in Joshimath. As every year, the tradition was followed with complete devotion this time too. A large number of devotees witnessed the closing of the portals during this event.

Why the Portals are Closed for Six Months Every Year

Badrinath Dham, situated in the high Himalayas, experiences heavy snowfall and extreme cold during the winter season. During this period, roads become impassable, and temperatures drop below freezing, making access to the temple risky.

For this reason, the portals of Badrinath Temple are closed every winter, and the worship is shifted to Joshimath. This arrangement is part of a centuries-old tradition, and devotees accept it with complete faith.

When Will Badrinath Dham Portals Reopen?

The date for reopening the Badrinath Temple is decided on the day of Akshaya Tritiya. According to tradition, the portals are reopened every year in April or May, marking the beginning of the Char Dham Yatra.

According to religious beliefs, the pilgrimage to Badrinath is considered the most significant stop in the Char Dham Yatra. It is said that without visiting Badrinath, the Char Dham Yatra is considered incomplete. Scriptures describe it as the second Vaikunth (abode of Vishnu) and the "Moksha Dwar" (door to salvation), where a mere glimpse is believed to open the path to liberation from the cycle of birth and death.
