An MBBS student died under suspicious circumstances at the medical hostel of Banaras Hindu University in Varanasi. According to preliminary information, the student allegedly took an overdose of an anaesthesia drug, after which his condition became critical. After fellow students became aware of the situation, he was taken to a hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Police and the university administration have initiated an investigation into the incident. A handwritten note was reportedly recovered from the scene, allegedly stating, "Do not say anything to the girl." Police are also examining the note. At present, it is not clear in what context the note was written. Officials said no conclusions should be drawn until the investigation is completed.
Police reached the hostel after receiving information about the incident and sealed the student's room. Items recovered from the room, including medicines and other evidence, have been taken into custody for examination. A forensic team also inspected the scene to scientifically determine the cause of death.
According to police, a post-mortem examination is being conducted, and viscera may also be preserved to determine whether the student's death was caused by an overdose of the anaesthesia drug or whether there was another reason. The actual cause of death will be confirmed only after the post-mortem and forensic reports are received.
The university administration expressed grief over the incident and said it would fully cooperate with the investigation. The student's family has been informed, and further formalities will be completed after they arrive in Varanasi. Police are also questioning the student's classmates and other hostel residents to establish the circumstances leading up to the incident.
Investigators will examine the student's mobile phone, laptop and other digital devices. Call records, messages and other digital data will be reviewed to determine who the student was in contact with before the incident and to assess the circumstances preceding the death. Officials reiterated that no speculation would be appropriate until the investigation is complete.
Police said the investigation is considering all aspects of the case. Further action will be based on the authenticity of the alleged handwritten note, the post-mortem report, forensic evidence and the findings of the digital examination. Officials said the full circumstances of the case will become clear only after the investigation is completed.
