Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva will meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Friday. During the meeting, the two sides are expected to sign a trade agreement.
Lula da Silva was accorded a ceremonial reception in New Delhi during his state visit to India. A formal welcome ceremony was held at the forecourt of Rashtrapati Bhavan, attended by President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Lula da Silva is on a state visit to India until 22 February.
Strategic Partnership and Bilateral Cooperation
The visit is being regarded as significant for deepening the strategic partnership between India and Brazil. Both countries are focusing on expanding cooperation in trade, energy, defence and technology.
At the ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan, the two presidents introduced their respective ministers and delegation members to each other. A high-level diplomatic delegation was present on the occasion. Following the ceremonial reception, bilateral talks between Lula da Silva and Prime Minister Narendra Modi are proposed. The meeting is being viewed as a significant moment in India-Brazil relations.

Critical Minerals and Multilateral Engagement
India and Brazil, as emerging economies, play an important role on the global stage. Both countries have cooperated at multilateral forums such as BRICS and the G20. According to sources, the meeting may include discussions on enhancing cooperation in critical and rare earth minerals. The importance of these minerals in global supply chains has been increasing, particularly for electric vehicles, semiconductors and renewable energy technologies.
Defence cooperation, clean energy, biofuels, agricultural technology and artificial intelligence are also included in the agenda for discussions. India and Brazil are both leading producers of biofuels, and possibilities for joint research and investment in this sector may be explored.
Global South Engagement
India and Brazil are often viewed as leading voices of the Global South. The two countries share similar positions on issues such as climate change, food security and the interests of developing countries. Experts said the visit could strengthen cooperation among countries of the Global South. It also provides an opportunity to promote trade and investment amid global economic instability.
